"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their newest bandmate."

There's just a key snag: I also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. Furthermore, we are in plentiful company. Multiple famous admirers have also begged for the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path doing sets at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

In the tradition of the greatest bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos frequently depict them marching in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure happiness you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the greatest compliment. It is a prize in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to make music."

"Therefore anyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-female band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the female artists that paved the way."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project emerged from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that odd liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The words track departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I love description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence required a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drums.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness inspired the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their romantic tales.

One man broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana told a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," notes Alana. "So to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Future

It's not difficult sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global following.

However Haim will always be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "There is no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still making music."
