Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these treatments must be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to original weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians stress that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle support.
