RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a number of entry passages down to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "Including them were a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
