The UK and US have agreed to a landmark trade agreement that will ensure zero tariffs on British pharmaceutical shipments being sold in the US market.

Agreement Details of the Accord

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has pledged to increase funding on drugs through the National Health Service (NHS). This pledge secures that tariffs on these vital products will stay at nothing for a period of the next three years.

This deal follows recent threats to dramatically increase tariffs on branded drug imports, with figures discussed up to double the cost.

"This arrangement between the UK reinforces the global environment for new treatments and establishes long-overdue balance to transatlantic pharmaceutical trade," an announcement declared.

Trade Importance

Medicines represent one of the the United Kingdom's most significant goods shipped to the America, which is clearly the largest buyer for major British pharmaceutical firms.

Statistics indicate that in the one-year period prior to last September, the UK exported drugs valued at £11.1bn to the US. This amount represented nearly one-fifth of all goods exports in that period.

"This deal secures employment, boosts funding and facilitates the UK to establish itself as a global hub for life sciences," a government official stated.

Detailed British Pledges

The pact includes several specific changes from the British government:

  • Revised Affordability Limit: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it judges new treatments to be too expensive by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a target to increase overall NHS spending on treatments from 0.3 percent of GDP to 0.6 percent over the coming ten years.
  • Payback Limit: The percentage manufacturers must refund to the NHS to stay within budget will be limited at fifteen percent. Previously, repayments were more than 20%.

Broader Context

This agreement comes amid a long-running dispute between the drug companies and the UK government over drug pricing and regulatory access.

This friction were exacerbated by arguments that American customers were paying a premium for the same drugs than consumers in the UK and Europe.

Recently, several significant manufacturing plans in the UK have been delayed or scrapped, while major funding commitments have been directed toward projects in the United States.

The Science Minister stated that the NHS needed to spend more on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a share of its overall budget over the last ten years.
